About

Dr David Merrilees is a New Zealand-trained urologist with fellowship experience in the UK and a focus on minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He specialises in urological cancers, including robotic prostatectomy and complex procedures like Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection.

Professional Journey
David is a New Zealand Trained Urologist who completed fellowships in the United Kingdom under Professor David Neal at Addenbrookes in Cambridge and subsequently Chris Eden at the Royal Surrey. In Cambridge David was trained in major open oncology including Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection for advanced testicular cancer. This operation is now one of David's areas of interest and expertise - he provides this service at Auckland City Hospital and in Private practice.

Whilst in Cambridge David was exposed to the introduction of Robotic surgery at Addenbroookes and subsequently developed an interest in minimally invasive surgery. His second fellowship under Chris Eden in Surrey was exclusively to learn laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancer and kidney pathology.

Upon returning to Auckland David's main area of interest has been laparoscopic surgery to treat urological cancers of the prostate and kidney and also functional disorders like PUJ obstruction. Additional areas of interest include urological complicaitons of Endometriosis.

After nearly a decade of laparoscopic surgery David began his robotic urological practice and now speicialises in Robotic prostatectomy. He offers Robotic Prostatectomy at Southern Cross Hospitals in Auckland and shortly at North Shore hospital for Health New Zealand.

David also offers treatment for other common urological conditions including lower urinary tract symptoms, kidney stones, bladder cancer and scrotal pathology (hydrocele, epididymal cyst, circumcision).
